ASPHALT SHINGLE WARRANTIES
As of January 1, 2001, several manufacturers are changing the warranties on their shingles
- 25 year shingles are being upgraded to 30 year shingles, 30 year to 40 year, etc. The
manufacturers known about are GAF, Tamko, Certainteed, and Owens Corning. This is good
marketing on their part. What it means to the consumer is that you get a better warranty
for what is hopefully a lesser price.

How will these changes affect the consumer?
First of all, let's say you get a price on a new roof in November 2001 but your roof is
not going to be installed until March 2002. In November 2001, 30 year shingles
weighed around 290 pounds per 100 square feet (per roof square). Now they weigh around 250
pounds per square. You paid for the 290 pound shingles, so make sure that's what you're
getting. If a roofer installs 30 year shingles that are manufactured after January 2002,
those shingles are of a lighter weight and not as good in quality. How would a consumer
protect himself in a situation like this? Check the manufacturing date on the shingle
bundles and the lot number. You can call the manufacturers' Technical Services Department
and they will tell you what weight of the shingles are. Below are some numbers.
These changes can also benefit the
consumer. Quite simply, you will get a better warranty on a less expensive product. Bottom
line, and I can't stress this enough, is that roof quality is primarily workmanship
related. IT IS MUCH BETTER TO HAVE A MODERATE PRODUCT INSTALLED CORRECTLY THAN TO HAVE A
HIGH END PRODUCT INSTALLED POORLY. Poor workmanship is the most frequent cause of
premature roof failure.
