The underlayment, better known as felt, provides a barrier between the shingles and the wood roof deck. Wood roof decks will leach the asphalt from the shingles, drying them out quicker, making them brittle, and subsequently shortening their service life. It is always good to install felt underlayment between any asphalt roofing products and a wood substrate.
