Now we're ready to install the jack. Let's
slip the pipe jack over the vent pipe then go ahead and install another shingle in the
next course.
Now we need to cut the next shingle around the pipe jack.
The cuts will be made in the same manner as the last ones. The only difference is that
we'll be cutting up from the bottom and removing a portion of the exposure. Let's go ahead
butt the shingle to the upslope side of the pipe.
Let's switch views and look downward at it
from the top. Make two marks - one on each side of the pipe.
Now butt the shingle against the side of the pipe and mark
where the upslope side of the pipe is located.
Now let's mark the shape we want to
remove. Again, we can use a lumber crayon, scratch the shape with our knife, or just
eyeball it. Now in this case, we're going to want to leave what's called a water-way,
which is a space between the vertical portion of the jack, and the edge of our shingle. To
do this, cut the shape about 1/4" to 1/2" wider than the size of the pipe...
...like this.
Set the shingle in place and nail it. It
should look like this. Do you see the water-way?
That's it! All we need to do now is fold
the lead jack down into the pipe.
Now we're done. The completed work should
look something like this.
